The North End Curling Club (NECC) is an arena curling club founded in 2017 at Steriti Memorial Rink. The purpose of NECC is to grow the sport of curling through leagues, Learn to Curl events, and community engagement. We offer curling on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday evenings to help our members grow and continually improve their skills. Our Learn to Curl events are open to anyone in the community who wants to learn about our great sport. Curling instructors work with attendees to learn the basics of the game, including delivering, sweeping, and game strategy. Our hope is to share our sport with anyone in the community who would like to try and learn more about curling! |
Mission
The mission of the North End Curling Club is to teach, promote, and encourage the sport of curling; to develop programs that lead to local, national, and international competition; and to teach the sport to the greater Boston community by creating public awareness and appreciation for the sport.
Location
The North End Curling Club meets at the Steriti Memorial Rink located in Boston’s historic North End. The rink is a short walk from North Station (Green and Orange T Lines) and from the North End’s excellent restaurants and bars. The rink operates seasonally (November through March) so at this time the group’s season is scheduled for late fall through early spring.
History
The North End Curling Club (NECC) was a dream in the minds of Greg & Erika Riehle, Pat & Terese OConnell and Paul Aronofsky. They first met in July 2016 at the Nazzaro Community Center in the heart of the North End.
The group formed a 501(c)(3), organized ice time at the Steriti Arena and enlisted help from the Grand National Curling Club (GNCC), Blackstone Valley Curling Club, South Shore Curling Club and several other local curling clubs with stones, brooms, storage and instructors.
On November 12, 2017, the NECC had its first Sunday night of curlers. They held many “Learn to Curl” events during the 2018 Winter Olympic year raising money for their own stones. Today the NECC has grown to two nights of curling, moving towards three nights a week during the winter season at Steriti Arena with over 128 members and a ever growing waiting list of participants.
